Nutrition and Vitamins for Health

Books on Nutrition, Health & Vitamins

by Marianne Woods Cirone, M.S., R.Y.T., Certified Yoga Teacher

According to almost all nutrition experts today, ideally, we would be eating a diverse diet of fresh foods that are locally grown in rich, fertile soil without pesticides.  However, the reality is that often our foods are less than perfect.  Animal sources of foods can be contaminated and at the same time, our bodies are being subjected to many more environmental stresses including pollution, chemicals, drugs and hectic lifestyles.  While it is optimal to focus on improving one's nutrition and lifestyle, there may still be an important role for dietary supplements.  Virtually every book written by doctors and nutritionists today recommends some type of supplements for people based on age, sex, and lifestyle factors.  The following summarizes and reviews some of the most popular books on nutrition and health, and gives links to further detail on the specific supplements and amounts given in these leading books.

The books reviewed below include an array of books written by leading physicians and nutritionists, including:

A bountiful source for solid information on general nutrition is Dr. Andrew Weil's book Eating Well for Optimum Health (see above for link).  Dr. Weil is today's leader in the field of Integrative Medicine, an approach which respects and nutures  the body's inherent ability to heal.  Some tips from Dr. Weil:  broccoli sprouts have 20 to 50 times the cancer protective compounds as sulforane as mature broccoli does. Also, make sure any vitamin E that you take is the d-alpha, not dl-alpha synthetic form, because it does not contain the same powerful cancer inhibiting compounds.  This book is a highly comprehensive overview of nutrition today.

Another sound source for nutritional information is The RealAge Diet  by Dr. Michael Roizen.  Dr. Roizen has researched the effect of various dietary and lifestyle practices on biological age, and makes recommendations which can potentially reduce the effects of aging.   Again, there is a lengthy questionnaire that can accessed at www.realage.com which helps the respondent determine whether there are dietary and lifestyle factors that he or she can make in order to reduce the effect of aging on the body.  This is a "user-friendly" guide to diets and nutrition, a good overview of nutriention for those who want to turn back the clock with their dietary choices.

A popular book is The Perricone Prescription, written by dermatologist  Nicholas Perricone.  It is refreshing to see aging and beauty being addressed with nutritional remedies, rather than surgery.  Dr. Perricone recommends eating of berries, green vegetables and salmon, plenty of supplements to keep skin smooth and firm.  One of Dr. Perricone's tips is to eat berries for the anti-inflammatory effects.  For a complete description of the vitamins, supplements, and skin care products recommended by Dr. Perricone with links to discounted products, click on Dr. Perricone Vitamins.  Dr. Perricone's program not only results in healthier skin, but also more normalized weight control.

For those who are really ready for a lifestyle overhaul, there are the books by Gary Null, Ph.D.  Null is a proponent of internal cleansing and is the only avid supporter of vegetarianism listed on this page. One of his books, Gary Null's Ultimate Lifetime Diet provides an in-depth analysis of nutrients, eating plans and supplements.  Gary suggests getting a doctor's okay when planning your own supplementation in order to avoid any contraindications and to begin with dosages one-fifth of the ideal.  He suggests adding one-fifth of the dosage over five months and then going off for one week so that the body does not develop a tolerance.

My personal favorite nutritionist is Ann Louise Gittleman, who has written several books which focus on a variety of topics from perimenopause and menopause to men's health and weight loss.  Every one of her books is an adaptation of the same healthy eating program based on plenty of essential fatty acids (Omegas), virtually no sugar, and lots of phytonutrients.  Her hot bestseller is a weight loss book called the Fat Flush Plan and is a wildly popular program featured on www.ivillage.com.  Dr. Weil, Dr. Perricone and Dr. Null are all popular guest speakers on PBS and can often be found doing a feature show.  Dr. Weil and Dr. Roizen are both popular guests on the Oprah show, and Ms. Gittleman can be found on many TV shows and on ivillage.com.
