Dr. Nicholas Perricone,
dermatologist and author of The Perricone Prescription
and The Wrinkle
Cure has a plan for preserving and renewing the
youthful beauty of the skin and the body through several
basic concepts. This program is said to improve skin
tone and color, reduce wrinkles, large pores, skin
discolorations, sagging and sun damage as well as
improving the health and appearance of the body.
First, he recommends a diet high in
"anti-inflammatory" compounds such as Omega-3
fatty acids (plenty of salmon) and anti-oxidant rich
fruits (especially berries) and vegetables (emphasis on
greens). This diet is low in
inflammatory high-glycemic carbohydrates (especially
sugar), red meats and hydrogenated oils. Dr.
Perricone's dietary recommendations certainly parallel the
"healthiest" and most current dietary
recommendations being made by physicians and nutritionists
today for weight loss, disease prevention and general good
health. Second, he
recommends 8-10 glasses of water per day. Third, he
recommends an array of vitamins and supplements to be
taken orally as well as certain products that are applied
to the skin.
Dr. Perricone
has generated some controversy regarding the use of these
"cosmeticeutals" as he calls them for
"stopping time", but you would be hard pressed
to find a (non-vegetarian) diet for the general population
that is more likely to promote overall health according to
current research findings (and
consequently improving physical appearance). It is
refreshing to see a program that promotes overall healthy
habits for beauty enhancement as opposed to surgery or
Botox.
For the most part,
reviewers of Dr. Perricone's program are huge fans in
favor of Dr. Perricone's program and its' results by a
margin of about 4 to 1 to those who did not like
it. The main criticism of the program is said
to the expense, although the majority of the program
simply requires making different choices, rather than an
outlay of money. The skin care preparations are
probably the most expensive segment of the program, and we
have provided some reasonably priced products under the skin care
preparations column below right.
Vitamin
C - 1000 mg. (more for smokers, stressed and older persons).
Prevents free radical damage, helps
produce collagen, strengthens immune system, aids in energy
production, assists in converting inflammatory chemicals to less
harmful substances.
Super antioxidant fights free radical
damage; 400 times stronger than vitamins C and E, prevent
inflammatory responses and slows onset of heart disease, arthritis
and Alzheimer's.
