Kundalini yoga was popularized in the
West by Yogi Bhajan, who is a practitioner of the Sikh religion. As
such, many of his fervent Western followers have adopted the traditional
Sikh turban (to keep energy in) and have changed their names to the
traditional names ending with Kaur Khalsa for women and Singh Khalsa for
men. (While many Western followers of Yogi Bhajan's teachings have
become Sikhs, most Eastern Sikh's are not yoga practitioners ). Needless to say, one does not need to go to
these lengths to enjoy many benefits from this powerful form of yoga.
A Western physician and follower of Yogi Bhajan's teachings who is named
Dharma Singh Khalsa has developed an excellent book (and tape) called Meditation
As Medicine: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force
which explains some powerful medical usages of this type
of yoga backed by scientific data. He offers many suggestions as to
sequences to direct various types of healing. Kundalini yoga is said to cause the
dormant or "Kundalini" energy at the base of the spine to
move into the rest of the body and to energize and restore
health.
Kundalini yoga can include chanting,
hand positions, breathing techniques, and sometimes a vigorous
aerobic type workout with repetitive motions and little emphasis on form or holding
positions.
Two popular new DVDs on kundalini yoga are
Mantra Girl Presents - An Introduction to Kundalini Yoga and Chanting
(link shown above)
and
Mantra Girl Presents - Advanced Kundalini Yoga for the Spiritual Warrior.
Erin Kamler, or "Mantra Girl" has been performing and doing
kundalini yoga for eight years, and released the
Mantra Girl
CD with Adam Smalley (see right) of haunting hypnotic sanskrit
mantras played with the New York philharmonic. Now, she has
released two kundalini yoga videos (both DVDs) -- an
introductory and and advanced version with have both received highly
complimentary reviews.
Shakta Kaur Khalsa has a popular book
entitled simply Kundalini Yoga.
Kundalini yoga has been said to yield results many times faster than
other types of yoga (sixteen times faster!). It can get into
more advanced breathing practices for longer amounts of time than
other schools of yoga might begin with. Other teachers say that they
choose to go slowly with breathing practices because they are so
very powerful. As they can intensify one's emotional state,
this can be very positive if one is already balanced and peaceful.
For the rest of us, we made need to proceed with a bit more caution,
so as with all yogic techniques, it is best learn to learn under the
guidance of a qualified teacher whenever possible.
Shakta Kaur Khalsa has also written the
KISS (Keep it Simple System) Guide to Yoga by DK Publishing
which overviews many styles of yoga. Gumurkh Kaur Khalsa, who is
also known as a "yogi to the stars" of Hollywood, has made video
entitled
Kundalini Yoga with Gurmukh.
Kundalini classes are probably
easiest to find in urban areas, those in outlying areas would
probably be lucky to find a Kundalini yoga class. There is
an extensive Kundalini yoga website called Kundaliniyoga.org,
with online Kundalini classes.
